The season is turning. Days are shorter, light sits lower, and weather windows get less forgiving. All of it changes how an inspection day runs.

None of it needs to cost you data quality, as long as it is planned for. Working with the light rather than against it, adjusting exposure as conditions shift, and building in the flexibility to move when the weather does.

A few things worth planning around:

🕐 less daylight, so tighter scheduling

🌦️ changeable weather and shorter clear windows

☀️ lower sun angles that affect exposure across the blade

Also in an operation mode: do you need to check some repairs done or left undone? Now it is the moment.

The teams that stay consistent through autumn are usually the ones that planned for the conditions rather than reacted to them.

Not every blade failure is a surprise. Some are a documented risk that nobody acted on in time.

24 years ago, a wind turbine in Germany lost a blade during a storm. What makes this case worth studying isn’t the storm, it’s what came out afterward: the operator admitted there had been a known defect in the blade before the storm hit, and it had been ignored.

That single sentence in the incident record is, in miniature, the entire case for predictive blade maintenance:

A defect existed and was known.

No system tracked how it was evolving.

An external load (wind) turned a manageable flaw into a full blade loss.

This is exactly the failure mode that routine drone inspection paired with AI-based damage detection was built to close. A defect flagged once isn’t always useful on its own; what matters is comparing scans over time, quantifying crack or delamination growth rate, and forecasting the load threshold at which that specific defect becomes critical. That turns “known but ignored” into “known, tracked, and scheduled for repair before the next storm season.”

The technology to catch this exists today and it is inexpensive compared to the gains. In 2002, it didn’t yet. The gap between those two facts is the opportunity in front of the industry now.

You know that your innovation is addressing a real market need when:

🔧 Customers keep pushing it to build more.

💰 Innovation funding keeps getting awarded, again and again.

🌍 Deployment expands from one market to 18+ countries without losing consistency.

👥 Teams stay for years instead of months.

And maybe the most important question: what happens when a deep-tech company manages to stay genuinely close to operational reality?

At Perceptual Robotics, we never built technology for the sake of technology. Every evolution came from the field, from operators, from urgency, from real wind turbines needing real solutions delivered fast.

That balance between innovation and execution is rare. And sustaining it globally is even rarer.

We are grateful to the people who believed in us early: our team, our customers, and especially our investors, who understood and continue to support that long-term value is built through trust, resilience, and continuous delivery.

The journey continues.

A new article discussing AI-driven wind turbine blade maintenance has just been published in the Italian energy magazine QualEnergia Science.

The paper looks at how automated inspection systems can support three critical steps in blade management:

Damage detection
• Technical assessment
• Economic optimisation of repairs

The goal is straightforward: help operators understand which damages require immediate intervention and which can be monitored over time.

Inspection data alone is not enough. What matters is turning that data into decisions that balance safety, availability and maintenance cost.

Our thanks to the authors and editors for the opportunity to contribute to the discussion around how AI can support better maintenance strategies across the wind sector.

The Lightning Protection System (LPS) plays a crucial role in safely conducting lightning strikes from the blade to the ground. A faulty LPS can lead to catastrophic blade or even turbine failure.

The Lightning Protection System (LPS) plays a crucial role in safely conducting lightning strikes from the blade to the ground. A faulty LPS can lead to catastrophic blade or even turbine failure.

LPS inspections provide confirmation of LPS issues but require a specific visit and are expensive.

With Eve, our compact autonomous drone, site managers gain the flexibility to perform on-demand visual inspections anytime, especially after a storm. When signs of a lightning strike appear, Eve can quickly capture high-quality imagery of affected blades, helping teams pinpoint which blades will require LPS checks with additional systems.

What makes this especially powerful is the ability to pair LPS inspections with visual blade assessments, creating a more complete picture of blade health while keeping costs under control.

Autonomous visual inspections empower wind farm teams to detect issues early, reduce downtime, and ensure safer, more reliable operations.

Repairing damaged equipment identified in wind turbine drone inspections is only part of the story, ensuring the repair is effective and safe is just as critical. That’s where post-repair inspections come in.

Our systems deliver fast, accurate post-repair assessments, helping operators and even repair companies to:

Check repair quality and ensure standards are met

Spot remaining or secondary damage in the repair early

Minimise downtime

Enhance safety for people and equipment

Support documentation and compliance

A repair isn’t complete until it’s been validated and is appropriately monitored. By combining high-resolution drone inspections, AI analysis, and actionable insights, which include the Repair Module for Repair Management, as well as the Repair Now Ratio and the possibility to upload any pdf to a specific turbine or damage, we ensure that every repair is not just done, but done right and monitored as needed.

In industries where downtime is costly and safety is critical, accountability and post-repair inspections are essential.

Across the industry, teams often face a familiar challenge. How do you make confident repair decisions when every provider classifies damage differently, image quality varies, and reports require constant double checking?

During a recent post-season review with a major UK operator, this issue came up again. Their team had been spending too much time validating data instead of planning repairs.

Once they began working with our inspection portal and reporting workflow, the situation changed. The clarity of the imagery, the consistency of the damage categorisation, and the structure of the summaries allowed them to trust the outputs immediately. There was no need to recheck hundreds of images. They could focus on prioritising work and preparing next season’s maintenance strategy.

This shift is exactly what our technology is designed to deliver. Inspection data should not only inform. It should enable decisions.

As operators modernise their internal blade health systems and introduce new scoring methodologies, we support that transition with adaptable exports and analytics that integrate seamlessly with their processes.

The real value of inspections is not the volume of data collected. It is the confidence to act on it.

The problem:

Wind farm operators are scaling up. Hundreds of turbines. Thousands of blades.

And each inspection campaign generates hundreds of high-resolution images with sometimes thousands of damages.

But more data doesn’t always mean better outcomes.

🔍 Teams get overwhelmed

⏳ Analysis takes weeks

⚠️ Critical damage can be missed or delayed

The solution:

At Perceptual Robotics, we combine advanced AI with a scalable data processing platform to turn raw inspection data into clear, actionable insights -fast.

✔️ 14% more accurate in identifying blade damage than traditional methods

✔️ Automated severity scoring and repair prioritization with RNR

✔️ Designed to handle data from entire fleets, across multiple OEMs and geographies

💡 What Sets Us Apart: The RNR (Repair Now Ratio)

Understanding which blades are damaged isn’t enough, you need to know which ones to fix first.

That’s why we created RNR – Repair Now Ratio:

A proprietary metric that combines damage severity, urgency, and contextual risk to automatically prioritise repairs based on what matters most.

With RNR, you get:

🔧 A clear ranking of what needs attention now

📊 A fleet-wide overview of damage impact

🧠 Smarter planning for maintenance teams and budgets

Whether you’re scheduling proactive repairs or responding to urgent risks, RNR ensures you’re always focused on the right turbines, at the right time.

The result?

⏱️ Faster decision-making

🛠️ Optimised repair planning

📉 Savings: Less downtime and lower costs

When you’re managing hundreds of turbines, let our AI do the heavy lifting – so your team can focus on what matters.
