Drones and acoustic monitoring combined

Combining continuous acoustic monitoring with on-demand drone inspections finds damage early, before it has a significant impact. A proof of concept with Werover in Scotland confirmed it.

About them

Werover is a UK-based technology company with offices in Germany, Qatar and Türkiye. It develops AI-powered solutions for continuous health monitoring and early damage detection of wind turbine blades, enabling predictive maintenance and the digitalisation of wind assets.

The challenge

  • Finding damage early used to need full inspections of every turbine, so for some damages the inspection came too late.
  • Real-time monitoring and early identification have to be cost-effective.
  • An immediate inspection after a warning needs a drone on site.

What they did

Windrover listened to two turbines for several weeks after being installed in June. Different damages create different acoustic signals, and changes point to where damage may be. On 25 November 2025 a Dhalion drone inspection checked whether the damage Windrover had flagged was really there.

  1. 01
    Set up Windrover

Acoustic monitoring in real time on two turbines.

  2. 02
    Results

Suspected significant damage in at least one blade on each turbine.

  3. 03
    Drone inspection

Autonomous drone inspection with AI data processing.

  4. 04
    Validation

The predictions were accurate: significant damage found on both.

The results

  • On one turbine, a Category 3 transverse crack (69 × 12 cm) at mid-span was the main defect.
  • On the second, a new suspected crack-like surface opening, not present in earlier drone inspections, was detected and confirmed.
  • Damage was confirmed exactly where the acoustic system predicted it.

What it makes possible

Continuous acoustic monitoring of blades as part of preventive maintenance, combined with in-house drone inspections to check each acoustic warning quickly. Acting early raises availability and lowers risk.

Continuous acoustic monitoring plus an in-house drone on the wind farm is an ideal combination: damage can be caught before it spreads, avoiding costly interventions.
